STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Cropping It Close
Nothing says, "Spring is here!" louder than Fashionistas out in crop tops. We already know how versatile cropped pants can be, but what about cropped tops? It is the perfect piece of clothing that will keep you looking effortlessly cool. Only daring, bold and most importantly, confident, Fashionistas can pull this look off... because regardless of what anyone says, confidence is the best outfit you can ever don.
Cropped tops were inspired by exercise outfits. They came into fashion sometime in the 1980s when an aerobic craze struck. It became popular when Madonna appeared in one in her music video Lucky Star, and even more popular thanks to the move Flashdance. Being cut off at the midriff (it is called the belly shirt for a reason you know), the cropped top is definitely one that will compliment your body by accentuating your curves, and thus making your waist seem smaller.
The midriff bearing top has certainly not lost its touch. Designers such as Prada and Dolce & Gabbana recently featured the once controversial top in their Spring/Summer 2012 fashion shows. The best thing about the style of the top is that you can basically just cut up any old shirt or tank top you have lying around.
However, if you do not want to do it yourself, fret not! Topshop is the place to go if you are after basic midriff bearing tops. Crop tops are not exactly the best option for formal events, but if you would still like to wear one, I would consider getting this piece from Bardot for the fancier occasion.
