STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Knitted Soul

Knitwear in the hot and humid Singapore, where the average temperature stands at about 30°C (80°F), is definitely a rare sight. I guess it is not surprising, and perhaps apt, that this Fashionista's dress is see through in the midriff section... because, how else can you stay cool, right?

Knitting is a very simple process that does not involve heavy machinery (like looms when weaving). It is, basically, a way of creating cloth from yarn or wool. The earliest known clothing that was knitted (or possessed a similar pattern) is supposedly a sock. This is very believable, as wearing wool is one of the best ways to keep warm. As knitting really only requires one person to do the job, it can serve as a great hobby and not to mention, is a fantastic way of killing time. 

The downfall to knitwear is that you can very easily go wrong with it. With knitwear, the rule "less is more" definitely applies here! If you were ever dressed by your grandmother as a child, you would probably know what I mean. Keep it simple like this Fashionista. She did not go overboard. This Fashionista merely paired her knitted dress with a black Longchamp handbag, and added a bit of colour to her outfit with red flats.

Surfstitch has a dress pretty similar to this Fashionista's -- white, great intricate design, but somehow still manages to remain simple. However, if you are after something less vanilla, I suggest checking out Alexander McQueen or Topshop.
